MRC Clinical Trials Unit, Cancer Group
Opportunities for statisticians/senior statisticians
Salary in range £23,122 (band 5) - £46,638 (band 3) p.a. inc.
The MRC Clinical Trials Unit is an international centre of excellence for clinical trials and associated research, taking trials from initial ideas and design, through conduct and analysis, to final publication and dissemination of results. The major focus is on large, international, phase III randomised trials. Over 25 statisticians are employed across the unit’s three clinical areas (cancer, HIV and other diseases). Statisticians are involved at all stages of the trial process.
We currently have vacancies in the Cancer Group for statisticians with or without previous experience in clinical trials. These vacancies provide exciting opportunities to make important contributions to cancer clinical research, and if appropriate, to collaborate on methodological research projects across the unit’s activities.
All candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a post-graduate qualification in medical statistics and/or epidemiology. Those with little or no previous work experience would be appointed to MRC band 5. They would become members of the relevant CTU trial teams, comprising senior statisticians/scientists, trial managers and data managers. While gaining experience in all stages of clinical trial development they would be responsible for interim and final analyses of ongoing clinical trials, under the direction of a senior statistician. Candidates with 2-3 years relevant experience would be considered for appointment to MRC band 4. They would take a key role in several trial teams, taking primary responsibility for trial analysis plans, interim and final trial analyses and would develop their expertise in trial design and grant application writing.
Candidates for the senior statistician post are likely to have at least 5 years’ experience in clinical trials, preferably in oncology. They would become a member of the Cancer Group’s senior staff team, which determines the overall strategy for the Group, and will oversee on a daily basis the CTU teams responsible for the design, conduct and analysis of a programme of multi-centre clinical trials and related research in one or more cancer types. This will involve close collaboration with clinicians and other clinical trials groups in the UK and internationally, and with a number of organisations including the pharmaceutical industry, cancer charities and patient advocacy groups. The successful candidate will be expected to play an active part in the National Cancer Research Institute Clinical Studies groups, who play a key role in identifying new trials, and be instrumental in the design of such trials.
Salary is dependent on previous experience and includes Location Allowance and Central London Supplement. Benefits include 30 days annual leave days per year, a contributory pension scheme and an interest free season ticket loan. The posts are available immediately.
