place in the Department of Social Medicine, University of Bristol from 18th-
20th April 2007.

This course is intended for clinicians, researchers, public health
specialists and other health care professionals who want to design and/or
use questionnaires in a health care setting, or gain an understanding of
how questionnaires are developed.
Course outline: Topics to be covered include:
Questionnaire construction: using qualitative methods to inform design,
developing indicators for concepts to be measured, question type, wording
and layout, using standardised measures, piloting;
Questionnaire administration: methods of administration, maximising
response rates and using interviewers in surveys;
Developing and evaluating scales: factor analysis, reliability, validity
and sensitivity to change;
Analysis of questionnaire data: descriptive statistics, deriving scales,
qualitative data.
Teaching time: Teaching time is approximately eighteen hours. The course
will be run as a series of short lectures and practical exercises,
including a computer practical using the statistical package Stata.
