Hi Karen
Surely there is absolutely no justification for appartments/housing blocks
WITHOUT A LIFT! Even people with children/pushchairs benefit!!! At my
'Accessability' group, nothing can get through on these lines (never seen it
actually) without a fight! Need to write strongly to planning authorities
as an 'Access' group quoting some DDAct guidelines!!! Best of Luck Liz East

Subject: [ACCESSIBUILT] Hotel coversion to Flats no lift!
How can we influence access when looking at dwellings, specifically
apartments (not new build)?
A 3 floor hotel is being converted to 18 separate flats. The building has
a permanent external ramp for access to the entrance but doesn't have an
internal lift.
The developer does not plan on providing an internal lift and intends to
remove the permanent external ramped access and replace with a platform
lift.
This is a regeneration area, there have been a number of hotels converted
into apartments, none of which have included internal lift access. (Ground
floors and communal areas are accessible.)
Part M does not cover dwellings and Lifetime Home design is used for
affordable housing RSL's, which is provided on ground floors! One
particular developer then put the show flat on the first floor!!!
1. Can I insist on permanent external ramp to be kept? (not platform
lift, vandalism could be an issue).
2. Disabled people can live and visit people on ground floor but all
other floors are inaccessible. Have any local authorities adopted local
access design that can make all floors accessible to wheelchair users????
I need evidence of good practice from somebody to get this on the agenda
please...
