In all the time I've been a list member, we've had but this one little
"glitch." So, I do not believe we need a moderator. I think we're
doing quite well on our own.
Best,

Dear All,
The recent email exchange on the WOIRN list has raised an opportunity
for a discussion concerning the moderation of the list. At present, the
list is unmoderated and members can post to unencumbered. Most of the
time this works well as the members are willing to police themselves,
but as we have seen occasionally someone inadvertently sends a personal
reply to the entire list.
One of the main ways to avoid such emails getting through would be for
the WOIRN list to become entirely moderated. There are however a number
of pros and cons associated with this approach:
Pros
* Moderation would act as a safe guard from irrelevant material
* Personal emails could be prevented from reaching the lists
subscribers
Cons
* This could lead to a certain amount of censorship on certain
discussions. I have seen discussions on moderated lists that I belong to
being shut down because the moderator prefers an interventionalist
approach.
* Moderation is an extremely time consuming job and it could mean
that posters would have to wait a number of days until the moderators
could allow their message to be posted to the list. One way of
preventing this would be for a number of the list members to volunteer
to help with moderation.
I would welcome a discussion on this matter and am keen to hear whether
the list members would like the list to become moderated.
Thank you
Best wishes,
