The East Midlands is a large and scattered region consisting of
Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Rutland, Northamptonshire,
Derbyshire. It is hard for science and engineering communicators to get to
know each other, share good practice and plan future events. During National
Science and Engineering Week (March 8-18 2007) I will launch EMSEC, the East
Midlands Science and Engineering Communicators web site at www.emsec.org.uk
to help science and engineering communicators to communicate with each
other.
EMSEC is a wiki, a special type of site where anyone can create and edit
pages. EMSEC is designed to support teachers, scientists, doctors,
engineers, trainers, lecturers, science communication professionals,
journalists, students and members of the public interested in talking or
writing about science or engineering.
Before the launch I would like as many people as possible to have registered
with EMSEC so we have something to show during the launch event. I am
therefore offering an incentive: anyone registering before 19 March 2007 who
lives or works in the East Midlands will be entered into a draw for TWO FREE
EUROSTAR TICKETS worth up to £100 each. Registration at EMSEC is free and
easy.
EMSEC will be officially launched with a series of such networking events
around the East Midlands to demonstrate EMSEC and discuss possible uses of
the wiki and how the community of communicators can be strengthened in the
future. Institutions wishing to host these events should contact me as soon
as possible. I would anticipate perhaps twenty participants at each event.
You would need to offer parking and light refreshments for guests upon
arrival. As I mentioned, these events will take place as close as possible
to NSEW.
