SOCIETY FOR EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY
SCIENCE COMMUNICATION BURSARY 2007
The Society for Experimental Biology is pleased to announce that it is once again offering a 4-week bursary for an early-career bioscientist graduate to work as the SEB's press officer during its Annual Main Meeting in Glasgow (31 March - 4 April) and in the three weeks leading up to it in its office based at Lancaster University (12 - 30 March).
Working under the guidance of the External Affairs officer, the main activities will be:
To write press releases in advance of the SEB's Annual Main meeting derived from the abstracts submitted prior to the conference. You will be expected to read all the abstracts and identify those with the potential on which to base a press story, interview scientists involved in the research by phone and during the conference, and to write eye-catching press releases.
To release the press stories via media such as Alphagalileo, Eurekalert and to talk directly to the press.
To act as the press officer at the SEB meeting, to field calls from the press, locate scientists and organise link-ups.
To assist in the organisation and running of the Externals Affairs programme of events where necessary and to act as the photographer for the meeting.
To write an article for the SEB's news bulletin and a short report after the meeting.
This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your experience of science communication. To register your interest for this post please email Sarah Blackford ([log in to unmask]) with your CV highlighting your science communication skills and a brief letter stating why you are interested in this bursary. Note that all accommodation and travel expenses will be covered for Lancaster and Glasgow.
