I think the people who use pop-ups and flash are *very expert,
particularly, say, the BBC, or the New York Times. The latter uses
flash and pop-ups, the former flash. I think the BBC still do a
text-only version. Most of the annoying pop-ups are used by
advertisers, and I wouldn't call the programmers they employ inexpert
by any means; they're particularly expert in running around the traps
laid by Firefox. Doesn't mean that they can't be annoying.
Text is good, text is searchable, indexable. If you want some
flashiness or slickness, use Cascading Style Sheets, the careful
person's flash.
From a technical POV, none of the poetrykit pages validate (e.g.
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.poetrykit.org%2Fwkshops2.
htm
or http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.poetrykit.org%2F)
but that's because Front Page is used to write the pages. Makes it
harder to write screen-scrapers (if you want to transfer it to another
medium like mobile-phones) but I'm guessing whoever wrote these pages
weighed up the pros and cons. FP was the choice. So. It's good enough
for the audience that reads poetrykit.
The remark that amused me the most was the 8 BILLION web pages. I
remember when they were three, and I could list the IP addresses from
memory. Aye, those were the days. Jumpers for goalposts, baccy
tuppence h'a'penny. Aye, grand.
