medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Apologies, George and others, for this non-medieval observation.
I believe the choice for the RCs was between observing Epiphany on the
actual day and having a church full of people for this important feast, that
has not been a holy day of obligation in my lifetime if it ever was. The
same holds for the Presentation of the Lord and, I think, the
Transfiguration. It may also be the case for the Ascension, that used to be
a holy day. I'm sure those better informed than I will chime in.
