Cfp for the open session on
‘EU – EURO – EUROPE: Where is European photography?’
Session organiser and chair:
Álvaro Pina, University of Lisbon
In Portugal (and in other countries) photographic practice and the
discussion of photography are in need of contexts and approaches that
will make them visible in public debate. Although widely practised in
everyday consumption and production, and relevant to representations of
the national and the European, photography remains peripheral to major
cultural institutions in Europe and its discussion vestigial in analyses
of Europe. Photography appears dispersed in the interstices of media and
scientific discourses.
Can cultural studies explore these interstices and create new knowledge
both of Europe and European photographic practices?
Two lines of enquiry are outlined here:
1) Where is Europe?
Somewhere to the north, south or west of where you live? Are cities like
Brussels, Strasbourg, or Frankfurt, more EU-ropean, more transnationally
EURO-pean, than larger national and international capitals like Paris,
London, or Berlin?
2) Who is a European?
European identity, now articulated to migration and integration issues,
is inflected by concerns about national languages and cultures. Can the
national be left out of, or is it integral to, the definition of who is
a European?
