TEACHING LEGAL RESEARCH SKILLS
22 February 2007, London

More and more law librarians are being asked to devise, lead or contribute to sessions teaching the skill of legal research. But how can general teaching skills and learning theory be applied in legal research skills training? This one-day course will enable you to plan, teach and review a legal research course.

BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
identify and evaluate all the elements which comprise 'legal research skills'
	devise effective learning outcomes
identify the advantages and disadvantages of different delivery methods and lesson structures
identify the purposes of different lesson materials and aids
identify and evaluate different student assessment methods used in legal research skills teaching
identify different evaluation methods to improve the effectiveness of their teaching sessions

The course will be practical and participants will gain the greatest benefit if they have in mind a particular lesson which they would like to develop or revise during the day. The afternoon session includes an opportunity to present your lesson plan for peer and tutor review.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Participants should be working in a law library or legal information environment and have a good knowledge of legal materials. They should have attended either CILIP's Teaching Skills or Training End Users courses or have attended an internally run Training the Trainer course.

COURSE LEADER: PETER CLINCH
Peter Clinch has been teaching legal research skills to undergraduates and postgraduates for more than 15 years. He is a registered practitioner of the Higher Education Academy and author of the UK Centre for Legal Education's best-selling book: Teaching Legal Research. Since 1996 he has been advisor to the General Council of the Bar on legal research skills training for its Bar Vocational Course.
