School of Civil Engineering
Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Geomechanics
Required to work on an EPSRC funded project “Discrete element modelling of
geogrid-reinforced railway ballast” within the Nottingham Centre for
Geomechanics, School of Civil Engineering. The project will be directed
by Professor Glenn McDowell. The objective of the project is to study
geogrid-reinforced ballast using the discrete element method in
conjunction with laboratory triaxial tests. The successful candidate will
be expected to perform numerical modelling of crushable aggregates using
the discrete element program PFC3D, in addition to performing triaxial
tests on reinforced ballast.
Candidates must have a PhD involving the investigation of granular
materials using the discrete element method. A background in soil
mechanics and experience with the discrete element program PFC3D are
desirable.
Salary will be within the range £24,161 - £30,606 per annum, depending on
qualifications and experience (salary can progress to £34,448 per annum,
