The Disability Studies in Education conference committee is pleased to
announce the winner of the 2007 Senior Scholar Award...Professor Len
Barton. Congratulations, Len!
This year's pool of nominees was extraordinary and included several
major scholars in the area of disability studies or disability studies
in education, making the decision extremely difficult.
Regardless of where one travels in the world, when people talk about
disability studies in education, Len Barton's name comes up. His years
of tireless work in the field at the international level makes him a
perfect choice for the award. We are pleased that we will be able to
honor Len's contributions to disability studies in education at this
year's conference.
This year, our Senior Scholar will be honored at a very special event on
Saturday evening of the conference. In the late afternoon, we will leave
the NLU campus and travel to The Arts Club of Chicago, where we will
have a plenary session on disability art. Panelists include Riva Lehrer,
David Mitchell, and Sharon Snyder. It is hoped that this plenary gives
us all ideas for how we might use disability art in our teaching. We
will then have a reception and small disability art exhibit and a chance
to talk with the artists. During the evening, we will enjoy a buffet
supper. The evening will conclude with a talk from Len.
The Arts Club is a lovely venue with a long history of offering a place
for Chicago-based artists to meet and exhibit their work. It is located
one block off the Miracle Mile and one mile from the campus where we
will have our conference. Public buses run from campus to very near the
Arts Club and all buses are wheelchair accesesible.
We hope you will join us in congratulating Len Barton as the 2007 Senior
Scholar Award winner.
