Dear All
I'd also add that it's important to talk with mentors about not only the
student teachers having preconceptions of what it is to be mentored and
what it is to be a teacher, but also acknowledge that the mentors
themselves come 'pre-loaded' with expectations about both what it means
to be a mentor and what it is to be a teacher. I advise that mentor and
mentee sit down early on to make these expectations explicit ... can
save a lot of hassles in the long run, plus good modelling of reflexive
professional development!
Best wishes

Dear Tim, Dear All,
I am just battling with some writing and saw your e-mail and this is my
initial response: -
My advice is that it is important always for the mentor to recognise
that
mentoring involves two parties, and as such the student teacher's part
in
the process has to be considered, i.e. mentors must remember that
student
teachers come with preconceptions of what it is to be mentored and of
course
of what it is to be a teacher.
I hope this is of help.
Best wishes
Rosalind

Dear all,
I am going to present my work at Roehampton University next week and I'm
sure I'll get the inevitable question, 'what advice would you give to
mentors?' Whenever this question comes up, I respond, 'commit to your
mentees', but it always seems a bit lame.
Do you have any other piece of advice that is helpful, in your
experience?
Best wishes,
Tim

Dear Everyone
Thank you VERY much for sending in your news - fascinating and
energising postings on our list.
I must admit I wa wondering if there were any replies at all to my pleas
for news ... nothing arrived
in my yahoo.com mail box ... and I was beginning to feel I must have
said something off-putting...
THEN I checked the Home Page of our list via JISCmail and found the
problem lay with the several
days delay in getting mail through to my [log in to unmask] account - I
THOUGHT it was quiet!
If you haven't got round to keeping in touch even by a one sentence
posting to say who you are
and what you're involved in then please do! We'd like to hear from you
and want to keep in touch.
Me? I have been working on a chapter for a book about integrating the
Possible Selves Construct
into mentoring. It's been accepted for publication so I am on a high!
I have also been working on
a presentation and PowerPoint slides to share with (primary) school
teachers on the same theme.
If you are interested in finding out more I've posted my work at
http://www.TeacherResearch.net
Is anyone else having any problems accessing messages from this list or
being able to reply to it?
Warm regards,
Sarah
