I have received the following message from a BCS member. I will be
please to pass on any advice.
I am an ex Gurkha Officer and I help the Gurkha Museum in Winchester
with their map collection which is building up steadily as old ex-Gurkha
Officers die and bequeath their maps to the Museum. They have a library
of reference and history books some of which have maps attached and
others refer to the maps in the plan press collection. They are
concerned to keep track of the maps which cover many parts of the World,
in fact where ever British Gurkhas have served. They would also like
to be able to reference maps to particular campaigns and significant
events in history.
Some maps, dependant on scale and location cover several countries, so
how to categorise and locate them is a problem and therefore storage in
a retrievable form is another challenge. They have a small computer
system in the library mainly PC based and would ideally like to instal
and work a suitable piece of software to meet the needs described above
if possible. Do you know someone in the Brit Carto Society who could
advise and who I could contact? Or perhaps you know of a piece of
software that might do the job. Needless to say they are not over flush
with money and I am helping them as a past member of the organisation
and, as a number of others are, for free.
