Dear map colleagues
Some of you will know that the Map Library here at Portsmouth is
incorporated within our Portland Learning Resources Centre. Following a
major change to our faculty structure, a review of the Portland LRC has
been undertaken and its findings were made available to me this week. I
regret to say that one of the key proposals of this review is that the
"Map Library be archived off campus but with access as required ...
artefacts would be retrievable within a day or so". This is only a
proposal and further discussion will take place in mid-January, however
I fear this may be the start of a fight to save our collection.
I have until 5 January to write a response and wondered whether anyone
on this list has had any experience of operating a collection in such a
remote way as proposed above. Any feedback, on or off list, would be
much appreciated. I'm convinced that it will not be possible for us to
operate with a remotely stored collection, not least because users are
often unclear about their own needs and return trips between issue desk
and collection are frequently required. Also, frankly, our catalogue is
not robust enough. Anyway, I'm keen to here from anyone with personal
experience that backs up my assertion that this proposal is unworkable.
Happy Christmas to you all.
David (hoping for a happier new year!)
