We work for Guildford council. Although we are not involved in the
development of the slyfield estate we do undertake monitoring work for
them.
The council many years ago installed a gas alarm system. Any new
developments are required to incorporate gas mitigation measures and to
incorporate gas alarm systems.
The development at the site tends to be car show room type developments.
i.e large airy frame buildings.
Each new development is assessed individually both from a
geo-enviromental view and geotechnical view.
There have not been any instances that I am aware of, of any gas or
subsidence issues at the site and the area is a thriving commercial
area.

I know that Guildford BC have an industrial estate built on a former
landfill ( Slyfield Green) and know that they put a gas curtain in to
stop gas migration a few years ago. Maybe if there are any Guildford
members of this group they could assist you. If not I can put you in
touch with someone.

Subject: Development on closed landfill sites
Does anyone have, or has anyone dealt with developments built on gassing
closed landfill sites? What were the remedial techniques involved and
what was the engineering solution? If developments are in use/ have been
in place for some time, have there been any post-development issues of
concern or has the development worked well?
