italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Remember that Dante says truthfully he is lying, in Paradiso, and in
Inferno he is lying when saying what he says is true!
The great writers of his day did ask and believe that virtuous pagans
could be saved, despite the Church's teaching that only Christian
baptism could do so, and we particularly find this with the use of
the legend of Gregory praying for the soul of the virtuous pagan
Emperor Trajan. I find similar comments in Langland, Julian of
Norwich, the Gawain Poet. Dante's De monarchia was on the Index for
centuries. But vernacular writings did not carry the same threat as
did those in Latin. Dante's souls in Hell themselves choose to be
where they are, while blaming everyone but themselves for their fate.
