AMIDSt – Amsterdam institute for Metropolitan and International Development
Studies

UNIVERSITEIT VAN AMSTERDAM

Researcher in Geography and/or International Development Studies
1,0 or 0,8 fte

The appointee will help to coordinate and develop a new spearhead research
program of the department, namely ‘Transnational research: operationalizing
the space of flows’. He/she will also be expected to do a small amount of
teaching.

The Department’s teaching program is conducted through the C.M.Kan
Institute, while its research program is under the auspices of the Amsterdam
Institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies (AMIDSt). The
C.M. Kan Institute offers regular and research Master’s program in Geography,
Planning and International Development Studies, whilst the AMIDSt runs the
research programs. The AMIDSt is organized into five research groups.

Transnationalism as a concept arose in the field of migration studies and
places the emphasis of social research on the ties that bind actors across
national boundaries. Since the mid-1990s there has been a rise of studies of
transnational phenomena yet very few give equal emphasis to the different
geographical locations implicated in transnational phenomena. Over the past 6
years our department has developed a multi-stited research methodology in
which migrant networks are studied at the different sites of transnational
phenomena simultaneously. We now want to expand this program to other migrant
networks and to different social phenomena such as education and elite
formation.

Tasks

- To develop research proposals, in cooperation with senior researchers, that
will enhance the capacity of the research program.
- To organize an international workshop on a specific aspect of the research
program.
- To coordinate the publication of an edited review bundle as output of the
workshop.
- To explore the possibilities of integrating transnationalism into the
teaching program.
- To contribute to the Department’s teaching program in migration and
international development studies (Bachelor’s and Master’s level).

Requirements

Knowledge of and experience in two or more of the following themes:
- Transnational migration
- Multi-sited research
- Fieldwork experience
- Education and upbringing in transnational families
- Transnational elites
- The use of public space by minorities
- Social network analysis

Fluency in spoken English and excellent English writing skills.

PhD in a relevant social science (anthropology, sociology, economics,
geography).

Willingness and proven ability to work in a team (organizational and
communication skills).

Research expertise as proven by international publications.

Affinity with the research theme.

Fluency in speaking and writing a language other than Dutch and English as
well as experience with research proposal writing will be considered an
advantage.
