I have to say that we have a large number of staff under 40 anyway, but I
haven't actually found that those over 40 are unaware of such things. They
talk to the customers and see various gadgets, and occasionally ask
questions, but I think as many over 40s take gadgets for granted as those
under 40.
We do have a weekly newsletter which we will send out occasional information
as and when, either from general awareness or in response to staff feedback.
The most useful thing we have negotiated with our IT department in recent
years is to allow USB memory sticks. For this we did a piece on this for
staff as many customers treat these as the standard means of carrying their
data about with them (many times more than floppies). This had procedures,
pictures and an outline of why customers use them, etc.
the response has been positive

Having occasionally asked younger family members and friends for tips
(I'm not the sort of person who willingly ploughs through the manuals) -
is it also worth considering inviting library members who are tech savvy
if they'd be interested in sharing their knowledge with staff or
mentoring fellow users - it might provide an opportunity for informal
community engagement as well as building staff confidence?

We hope to use our library E-Guides in this capacity and are currently
drawing up an action plan as to how they will do this. They will use a
mixture of face to face training sessions, online training sessions,
information sheets, and some guided hands on experience.
Thanks

Subject: Keeping up to date with gadgets
Hello,
Frontline staff need to be kept up to date with new gadgets /
technological
advances, so that when customers talk about a blackberry, or e books ,
or
ask if we have RFID or can they access Youtube, they know what they are
on
about .
Staff need to see these new things, know what they look like and know
what
they do ...not necessarily know how to work them but at least have some
sort
of passing familiarity with them.
How do you keep your frontline staff aware and up to date with all the
latest popular ICT developments?. . ...especially when there is a
dearth of
folk under 40 working on the frontline.
Many thanks
Lynn Buick
