We have been experimenting with Google's custom search facilities
from ROAR.
http://roar.eprints.org/index.php?action=google
If you choose a nice common search term such as "open-access", you
get 10 pages of results returned.
If you use the ROAR menu to filter the search by Geographic country,
e.g. Australia, you will get only TWO RESULTS returned. (This has
requested google to only use the 'Australia' refinement which has
been applied to all 29 Australian repositories.)
if you further filter the search by Software (choosing EPrints, of
course) then the result list springs back up to 10 pages!!!
It turns out that *any* application of a second refinement seems to
lead to an increased number of search results. (You can get similar
results by swapping the ordering of eprints and australia).
Does anyone have any experience that would explain this behaviour?
