Hi All
I have been asked to circulate this query to the list. Please reply direct
to Caroline rather than me.
Thanks

Dear all,
Seaham Harbour
I am carrying out a Conservation Management Plan for Seaham Harbour in
County Durham (NZ 4325 4945) and would like to be able to put the
importance of the harbour into a wider national context for the Statement
of Significance section. I am hoping you might be able to help.
The harbour is late Georgian and was built from scratch at the same time as
the town, also called Seaham Harbour, in order to export coal. My trawls
through the NMR would suggest that nationally there are very few
unadulterated Georgian Harbours left which have not been backfilled and
turned into car parks and retail developments. So in terms of significance,
the harbour does seem to be rare, but not unique. Can anyone give me an
indication of whether they know of any Georgian purpose built harbours
which have survived relatively unscathed?
The other aspect to Seaham Harbour’s significance seems to be that it was
built at the same time as the town, almost like a late Georgian new town,
and so its significance lies partly in its relationship to the town. Does
anyone have any parallels for this?
I would be very grateful for responses, even if they are in the negative or
‘haven’t a clue’ variety. It all helps,
Best wishes,
Caroline Hardie
