Wicker is a street immediately across the river Don from the castle site in central Sheffield (SK 359 879). David Hey in his "History of Sheffield" always refers to it as "The Wicker", even though only one of the many maps he reproduces so labels it. This raises these questions:
1. Is this a wic name in the sense of 'dependent settlement'? (I could not find it in Richard Coates' Nomina 22 article.) If so, what is the -er suffix? Is this another Wicor?
2. Why the definite article?
