My critiquing of the social model comes from a different direction to Tom
Shakespeares,
I criticise the fact that the social model has not really taken on board the
issues it purports to and still contains within its structure the same
inherited impairment based negativities and self-stigmatisation.
Do not assume either that there is a simple Medical model/Social Model
dichotomy and it is all of one against all of the other when life is not
that simple and to be critical of the social model for failing to take on
board such issues as neurodiversity and fully appreciate difference that I
am supporting a medical model when you should know equally well how critical
I am of that model and what it condemns us to.
I hope before too long to make the text of my Lancaster paper available on
the Disability Studies Web site, I am just waiting for some critical comment
about its readability first.
As for that drama documentary I had a neurodiverse friend who phoned me up
who was very distressed about it particularly the portrayal of the AS
daughter as she thought that the portrayal was very inaccurate and certainly
did not show autism as it is.
Wendy Ainscow might well have various issues of her own but essentially she
was attempting to murder her daughter or co-erce her into self destruction,
how can I sympathise with that.
