Maya Deren, in her definitive book on Haitian Voudoun
'The Divine Horsemen' posits that her that her success
in the relating of and to the Voudoun religion of
Haiti was because she was an artist, which gave her
the ability to recognise 'facts of the mind' when
presented with the ''fictions' of mythology'..ie
relate and respond to the form of a belief system
without being bogged down by the intellectualisation
of the composition of said form.
Another interesting theory she put forth, was that as
an artist, who could be considered to be an outsider
from mainstream society, she had a greater ability to
relate to ideas and beliefs that also dwelt on the
fringes of the accepted 'norm'.
That said, surely this forum is to imform inspire and
challenge whilst trying to work within structures of
academic form.
