italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear friends,
Questi i fatti.
Una postilla: Silvia Ballestra ha letto ieri in Aula Magna pagine molto
offensive verso la fede Cristiana che personalmente ho trovato di pessimo
gusto.
un cordiale saluto
Massimiliano Chiamenti

>Dear Daragh thanks a lot for this.
>I fully agree with him, moreover local politicians (Rosa Russo Jervolino,
>current mayor of Naples), has strongly criticized Roberto's denunciations
>and his great book (many observers have compared him to Danilo Dolci ).
>Please sign the letter of solidarity.

>Dear Colleagues,
>
>I am writing to you all about a subject I never thought that I would ever
>have to write about in the field of Italian Studies. In the last few days
>it has become increasingly evident that the life of one of Italy's
>brightest young emerging writers is at risk. Roberto Saviano, the 28 year
>old author of this year's truly important literary "caso", a
>romanzo-inchiesta - "Gomorra: Viaggio nell'impero economico e nel sogno di
>dominio della camorra" (Milan: Mondadori, 2006) and winner of Premio
>Viareggio-Repaci 2006 for a first time author - has begun to receive
>anonymous letters and threatening phone calls for his denunciation and
>courageous attack of the Neapolitan Camorra. Moreover, the process of
>"isolamento" of Roberto has already begun, with shop-keepers in his local
>area refusing to serve him for fear of reprisals. Roberto has now been
>placed under police protection as a result of these very real threats and
>the future is uncertain.
>
> Massimo Carlotto, Giancarlo De Cataldo, Umberto Eco and
>Vincenzo Consolo have already come out strongly in defence of Saviano in
>the hope that he is not marginalized further. I would urge all members of
>the Italian-Studies mailbase to consult http://www.sosteniamosaviano.net/
><http://www.sosteniamosaviano.net/> and read about Roberto's activities
>and perhaps sign the letter of solidarity addressed to Roberto and to the

>del Senato. I call on all members to demonstrate their solidarity with
>Roberto and oppose this intimidation and depravity in the hope that civic
>humanism may still have a voice.
