Heritage Lottery Funding secured to encourage public to explore Surrey’s
past
Records about the historic landscapes, artefacts and archaeology of Surrey
will soon be made available online, thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF)
grant of £218,500.
This award will allow the Exploring Surrey’s Past (ESP) project to expose
this largely untapped resource to the public and encourage greater
awareness, pride and involvement in Surrey’s heritage.
For the first time, this wealth of heritage information held by
organisations throughout Surrey will all be searchable, through one online
portal. This will allow researchers to simultaneously explore the
archaeology, the archives and the artefacts of Surrey.
The accessible website will also feature supporting materials, allowing
interested persons to explore the history and archaeology of the county by
period, or look at the history of their own borough, investigating themes
such as the Thames’ importance in the history of Surrey. Glossaries and
timelines will enhance this information, helping researchers to place their
studies within local and national context. Resources will also include oral
history projects and photographs of local buildings, prepared by volunteers
for inclusion on the website.
There will be a chance for people to get involved by volunteering to help
prepare data before it goes online and to compile their own pages,
reminiscences and photographs to add to the resource.
Meetings will be held to demonstrate how the resource can be used for a
wide range of research, from looking up the history of your street to a
University project on Roman Villas in Surrey. Schools will be encouraged to
make use of the range of educational resources available on the site,
supporting national and local objectives for lifelong learning, social
inclusion and accessibility.
As an online resource, Exploring Surrey’s Past will allow anyone with an
interest in Surrey’s heritage access to a hue amount of information, fully
accessible 24 hours a day.
The overall aim of the project is to increase awareness, interest and
involvement in the heritage and historic environment of Surrey, facilitated
by better accessibility to the information held within the County Council
and partnership heritage databases. A number of key databases will be
copied onto this resource as part of a 3-year project, including the Sites
and Monument’s Record (SMR). Additional databases from a variety of
institutions will be added as the project progresses, to further enhance
the website.
Christine Stevens, the Council’s Executive Member for Safer and Stronger
Communities commented "Exploring Surrey's Past shows the commitment of
Surrey Heritage to work together to make available the fantastic resources
held at the Surrey History Centre and in museums across the county. This
project will allow people to take their studies further and to learn about
and enjoy the history, archaeology and heritage of Surrey."
Sheena Vick, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for the South East, said:
“Programmes such as ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ show just how interested
people are in exploring their roots. Without records we will lose the
stories of yesterday and this exciting project will ensure that Surrey's
past is available to anyone who wants to find out more.”

Notes for editors:
1. The Surrey Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) is a record of all
archaeological sites and finds within the current administrative county of
Surrey. It was created in 1972 by the Surrey Archaeological Society, using
the information that had been compiled by the Ordnance Survey
Archaeological Division. In 1979 the SMR was transferred to Surrey County
Council. Since then the record has been updated on an ongoing basis to
include numerous new sites and finds, and also includes records on
archaeological fieldwork and excavations.
2. The County’s Archaeological Officers use the SMR to give informed
advice to County and District planners, developers and archaeological
contractors. This advice can help in reducing the impact of development on
archaeology, in drawing up management plans ands in site interpretation.
However, the SMR is also a valuable resource for students, local
archaeologists, local historians and interested members of the public.
Anyone interested in finding out more about an aspect of Surrey’s past will
find the archaeological SMR an invaluable place to start their search.
3. Partnership databases signed up to be included in the project and on
the on-line resource include:
Bourne Hall Museum (Local Authority museum)
The Bourne Society
East Surrey Museum (Independent museum)
Godalming Museum (Independent museum)
Guildford Museum (Local Authority Museum)
Rural Life Centre (Independent museum)
Surrey Heath Archaeological and Heritage Trust
Tandridge Local History Group
Woking Galleries (Independent museum)
Surrey Museums Consultative Committee (data from geology project)
4. The on-line resource will provide a “portal” for the heritage of Surrey
and will include information pages, educational resources and searchable
databases. The site will provide a research tool for all levels of
interest, from general curiosity to academic research.
5. The on-line resource will be accompanied by a series of outreach
activities and literature designed to appeal to Surrey’s diverse
communities and will include talks, leaflets, travelling exhibitions and
schools resource packs.
6. A dedicated project outreach officer will be responsible for organising
public, local interest groups, and community participation and contribution
to the project and will develop links with local groups to become involved
with the project.
7. ESP will be available on the www and through schools and libraries
across the county.
Regards,
Bruce
