It is with great pleasure that we inform you that the latest edition of the
"Thesaurus Ethics in the Life Sciences" which includes for the first time
terms and ideas related to disability studies is now available at
http://www.drze.de/BELIT/thesaurus?la=en
The thesaurus was developed by the German Reference Centre for Ethics in the
Life Sciences (DRZE) and different partners from Germany, France and the US.
It is the first international, trilingual controlled tool for indexing and
retrieving literature in the fields of medical ethics and bioethics.
The first two editions of the thesaurus followed in general the medical
model of disability, as they based their terms and definitions on medically
oriented thesauri, e.g. Bioethics Thesaurus, Medical Subject Headings MesH.
Disabled people were characterised as ill and weak by only relating them to
terms like "chronic disease", "long-term care", and "vulnerable
populations". Fortunately the DRZE asked the Institut Mensch, Ethik und
Wissenschaft (IMEW) in Berlin to contribute to the now available 3rd
edition. IMEW is specialised in interdisciplinary and independent research
in the field of medical ethics and bioethics with a special focus on the
perspective of disabled people. With the support of disability studies
experts from Europe and the US, the IMEW gave comments and suggestions on
disability-related terms. As a result keywords like "disability studies",
"disability rights" and "disabled people's movement" were introduced into
the new edition. It is the first time that the concept of disability studies
is visible in this context. This can be perceived as a great step forward.
However, it should be stated that a comprehensive international thesaurus is
a compromise between very different approaches and furthermore should be
compatible to the thesauri already in use. As a consequence, the 3rd edition
still contains a range of terms which reproduce the medical model, but it is
a step forward that numerous synonymous terms (related to these Thesaurus
terms) were now introduced which reflect the terminology disability
researchers and activists use themselves.
Many thanks to all experts who have supported us, and special thanks to our
collegues at the DRZE.
