How I liked that story, Kent! And the final touch - KFC stands upon
the mound today.
I found a wonderful large second hand bookshop once in Perth, Western
Australia, very tidy but extremely crowded: every corner full and all
shelves to the ceiling. When I asked the owner - a stooped grey-haired
old man who looked more like a clerk than a professor - where he had
purchased all these books, he replied he had collected them over the
years, and when he retired his wife wanted him to get rid of them, but
he opened up a store (upstairs, in the back corner of a shopping
centre) instead. I visited regularly, although he had few books I
wanted, but the inevitable happened, and one day the door was closed.
I have no idea what his wife would have done with the books.
On my short visit to England earlier this year, I missed seeing 'the
largest bookshop in the world', which I believe is in London
somewhere. Does it exist? And, if so, where is it specifically?
My favourite bookshop in Australia is 'Collected Works', run by Kris
and Reeta Hemensley. If ever y're in Melbourne, go there. It is a
wonderful haven for poets.
