Wolfsonian-FIU Fellowship Program
The Wolfsonian-Florida International University is a museum and research
center that promotes the examination of modern material culture. The focus
of the Wolfsonian collection is on North American and European decorative
arts, propaganda, architecture, and industrial and graphic design of the
period 1885-1945. The Wolfsonian library has approximately 50,000 rare
books, periodicals, and ephemeral items, as well as standard reference
materials.
The Wolfsonian houses the largest public collection of objects associated
with German Design Reform (1880–1910) outside of Germany. The collections
include examples by members of the leading art colonies, workshops, and
design associations (e.g., the Darmstadt Art Colony, Vereinigte Werkstätten
in Munich, and Deutsche Werkbund), and important journals and books about
decorative arts and architecture in Germany.
The Wolfsonian also has a strong collection of twentieth-century German
graphic art, including travel advertising and other commercial posters,
political propaganda from the Weimar and Nazi periods, and war propaganda
posters. The Wolfsonian has one of the largest and most significant
collections in the United States for the study of Nazi-era material
culture, including many publications, graphic art, fine art, decorative
art, and an architectural photography archive from Paul Ludwig Troost.
Besides material from Germany, the Wolfsonian also has extensive holdings
from the United States, Great Britain, Italy, and the Netherlands. There
are also smaller but significant collections of materials from a number of
other countries, including Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Japan, the
former Soviet Union and Hungary.
Fellowships are intended to support full-time research, generally for a
period of three to five weeks The program is open to holders of master’s or
doctoral degrees, Ph.D. candidates, and to others who have a significant
record of professional achievement in relevant fields. Applicants are
encouraged to discuss their project with the Fellowship Coordinator prior
to submission to ensure the relevance of their proposals to the
Wolfsonian’s collection.
The application deadline is January 2, for residency during the 2007-2009
academic years.
