I feel I may be in danger of losing my amateur status, having been named as
one of the 'winners' of a 'competition' to name the new West of
Waterlooville Major Development Area, organised by the main developer. The
name chosen is 'Newlands' - a name of startling unoriginality, but perfectly
justified historically, as it seems to be the oldest place-name in the area!
(What is now Newlands Farm was a grange of Southwick Priory in the 13th
century, and the area had probably recently been cleared from the Forest of
Bere.)
