Colleagues:
Please consider the CFP listed below. We are looking for one more paper
to fill this session and will review abstracts or outlines through the end
of the week. Please email one of the organizers if you have any questions.
Call for Papers, AAG 2007 (San Francisco):
Social Theory and Space in the City
Henri Lefebvre famously wrote that "theoretical thought sees itself
compelled to redefine the forms, functions and structures of the city...as
well as the social needs inherent to urban society." The apparent vigor in
scholarly discussions of neoliberal policy regimes and (re)new(ed) urban
forms are conspiculously lacking in sustained discussions of social
theory. This session seeks papers that consider the contemporary city from
a socio-spatial perspective. It is our hope that these papers will inspire
criticism and debate over the role of urban citizens in the production of
space. Papers should be well-informed, theoretically grounded, and
empirically driven. Some suggestive topics are (but by no means limiting):
- discordant relationships of state and society
- mobilization and activism amongst urban dwellers
- the undermining of urban theoretical binaries
- the construction and destruction of policy
- pursuits of social justice
Inquiries and abstracts of 250 words or less should be emailed to the
session organizers below before October 20th, 2006.
