Dunno about 'academic', but sci-fi and fantasy writers
love playing around with the notion of a 'multiverse',
e.g. claiming that whenever anyone in one universe
chooses A this immediately calls into existence an
alternative universe where he/she chooses not-A. They
*say* there's good scientific backing for this, but I
wouldn't know. However, such a scheme of things would
allow for the simultaneous existence of an infinity of
gods, each in his own universe, with his associated
Otherworld. Maybe Terry Pratchett could do justice to
this ....
