Development Centre.

Qualitative Systematic Review Workshop

20 - 21 October 2006

Qualitative research in the context of systematic reviews is a new and
growing area of research. There are many learners who are developing
methodology - we are all in the position of being learners. This workshop
will be participatory with speakers and participants sharing experiences and
learning from each other.

Patient Based Evidence (formerly Health Status Measurement)
15 January 2007 (online), 29 January - 1 February 2007 (face-to-face)
This course in Patient Based Evidence aims to develop informed users of a
range of different types of measures including health related quality of
life. It covers conceptual ideas, properties of measurement, cross-cultural
issues and economic aspects. The aim of the course is to help students
become informed users of health-related quality of life measures, while
understanding the broader research and policy context in which such
measurement is placed.

Statistics for Health Research
22 January 2007 (online for 10 weeks)
This online statistics course is designed for busy health and social care
professionals who need to understand the basics of health statistics without
becoming statisticians. Students can study at the time of day and week that
is best for them. Online tutorial support is provided and concepts are
applied to real-life scenarios. The course is designed around
student-student and student-tutor communication to ensure that students are
able to develop a sense of an online learning community to support and
motivate them during the 10-week duration. This course is built upon
material developed in face to face teaching on the University of Oxford MSc
in Evidence Based Health Care and was supported financially by the
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). The BBSRC
support was essential in getting this project off the ground and made it
possible to develop the high standard of online materials.

Key Concepts in Health Care for Homeless People

29 January 2007 (10 weeks online)

Gain a broad perspective on issues such as the causes and consequences of
homelessness, different types of homelessness, the roles of statutory and
non-statutory organisations in relieving homelessness, and the main clinical
problems affecting people experiencing homelessness. This is the first
module of a Postgraduate Certificate in the Provision of Health Care to
People Experiencing Homelessness, a first in the UK and possibly Europe.

Systematic Reviews

19, 21, 23, 26, 28 February 2007
10, 11, 14, 15, 16 May 2007
11, 13, 14, 18, 20 June 2007
This 5-day course will take the participants through the process of doing a
systematic review, focusing on the practicalities rather than the theory. It
will consider the practical aspects of: question formulation; study
identification; appraisal of quality; data extraction and collection;
statistical synthesis; reporting. Due to popular demand, the course is run
several times a year.

Clinical ENT

26 February 2007 - 2 March 2007

A comprehensive overview of the knowledge required of specialist trainees
such as Specialist Registrars and Senior SHOs at the beginning of their
specialist training. Topics covered are appropriate for year 1 and 2 in the
syllabus of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Areas of controversy
will be highlighted. The course is suitable for candidates preparing for the
DOHNS examination.

Evidence Based Dentistry

14-18 May 2007
Oxford University is offering a 2-day introductory course or a longer 5-day
course in Evidence Based Dentistry. The course has been developed
specifically for dentists and other oral healthcare professionals who either
want an introduction to evidence based dentistry or a more comprehensive
course. The course aims to help dentists and oral health care professionals
develop their understanding of the evidence-based approach and become more
efficient at using the best available evidence in their clinical and policy
decisions.

Ethics in Health Care
Autumn 2007
With the advent of clinical governance, health professionals are being
increasingly called upon to examine the ethics that lie behind treatment
decisions. The overall aim of this course is to provide practical skills
that can be immediately applied to the process of ethical health care
decision making.

Qualitative Research Methods
Autumn 2007
The course is structured to help students to design and carry out a
qualitative project. Students must identify a work-based issue that can be
investigated using a qualitative approach. Participants conduct fieldwork to
collect data, and practical assistance is given with data analysis and
writing up. Small group sessions are used to critically appraise the quality
of qualitative research.

Randomised Controlled Trials
Autumn 2007
The course aims to help participants with the practicalities of conducting
randomised trials. This includes the processes for resourcing the trial,
recruiting and randomising participants, maintaining the trial's momentum,
and analysing and reporting it. The course focuses on the practice, more
than the theory, of randomised trials. It tackles practical issues that are
often encountered in such research. It will be of most benefit to someone
planning to do a trial in the near future; but should also be useful to
anyone who may do a trial or wants to find out more about how to interpret
trials done by others.
