Mark: I thought it was nice of Randolph to defend me. (Thanks Randolph). My
beef, as I've said several times and won't say again, was not with the
negativity of the comments, but with their nature, which went beyond
discussion of the poem to (as here) veiled accusations about the process and
the good faith of my creative work. I didn't have the same problems with
Frederick's comments, which were just what they were and which can be agreed
with or disagreed with. Aside from that, I think you profoundly
misunderstand the poem if you think it is simply an "attack" on "America".
Thanks Kaspar for your most interesting responses! I don't feel right
discussing them, since in the end talking about one's own work is kind of
fraudulent, but I am most fascinated by what you say. And Caleb, thanks too
for that Shaw Neilson link - that poem has always been special to me.
All best
Alison
