School of Arts
Chair in German
Applicants are invited for the position of Chair in German in the
School of Arts, reference 4146
The School of Arts at the University of Swansea comprises four
sections: Modern Languages, English, Media and Applied Linguistics.
Modern Languages offers a wide range of degree schemes in (or
involving) French, German, Hispanic Studies (Spanish, Catalan and
Portuguese), Italian, Russian, Translation and Welsh. The departments
making up the Modern Languages were awarded ratings of either 4 or 5 in
RAE 2001 and the section is one of the most highly successful languages
units in the UK. The School is making a strategic investment in
Languages with the appointment of three new Chairs (German, French and
Hispanic Studies) as well as lectureships in Hispanic Studies, French
and/or Italian.
The person appointed will be expected to demonstrate high research
capability in any field of German Studies and to offer research
leadership to the German section. The postholder will be expected to
provide input of the highest quality into the Department's submission
for RAE 2008. Applications are welcome from specialists in all areas of
German Studies and a proven record of success in attracting significant
research funding is desirable.
While the post is not currently linked with the Headship of German
within the new School of Arts, the postholder should expect to play a
significant part in promoting the importance of German within the
School and the University. It is likely that the postholder will, at
some future date, be expected to head the German section and/or play a
part in the management structure of the School of Arts.
Applicants should have a proven record of research and publication and
experience in attracting research funding as well as the ability to
communicate knowledge and information to students, experience of
student supervise/support and the ability to provide strong academic
leadership in terms of both research and teaching.
