Over 300 children every year will benefit from an additional £0.5 million
funding to improve autism services.
Health Minister, Paul Goggins, announced that the funding will be used to
employ additional staff to help in the early intervention of children
diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This is in addition to the
£0.5 million recurrent funding in 2004/2005 to improve the life outcome for
200 children and young people with autism.
The Minister said: "I am committed to developing and improving services for
people with autism. As part of the Children and Young People Funding
Package, £4 million was made available for specialist support teams. Today I
am announcing an additional £0.5 million recurrently to develop our service
provision for children diagnosed with autism. This money will fund up to 15
additional posts to help support families and provide more one-to-one
clinical intervention for children with ASD.
"In Northern Ireland, around 10,000 children are believed to have ASD. There
is no known cure but early intervention, together with specialist education
and support, is vital in order to give children every chance to live
independent and full lives.
"This money will make a real difference to the lives of hundreds of children
and their families."
NOTES TO EDITORS:
1. The Children and Young People Funding Package, March 2006, provided £4
million recurrent to establish Multi-Disciplinary Support Teams to provide
support services to schools. This support for schools will further assist in
the diagnosis of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, enabling them to
avail of early intervention services.
2. The additional £0.5 million for early intervention will be allocated to
the four health and social services boards.
