AAG2007 Call for Papers
San Francisco, 17th-21st April 2007
The restructuring of urban space, higher education and (post)students
Organiser: Darren P. Smith (University of Brighton, UK)
A major constituent of the restructuring of urban space is the expansion
of higher education systems and the manufacture of student landscapes,
such as studentification (Smith, 2005). This global phenomenon is
linked to the seemingly relentless quest to nurture the imperatives of
knowledge-based societies and economies, and ensure maximum
competitiveness, innovation and efficiency. As a result, social,
cultural, economic and political geographies within many metropolitan
and provincial towns and cities have been reconfigured (Hubbard, 2007).
This session seeks papers which expose the multiple dimensions of these
emerging expressions of higher education-related urban change. In
particular, papers are sought which consider how contemporary systems of
higher education and 'studenthood' are linked to issues, such as:
* Processes of gentrification and the rise of the 'creative
classes'
* The production of new forms of student accommodation
* The increase of international students and transnationalism
* New patterns of student migration and population movements
* The unfolding geographies of young professionals and recent
graduates
* Studentification and urban planning regimes
* Transformations to urban housing markets and tenures
* The diversification of studenthood and student lifestyles
* New expressions of cultural capital and the 'student habitus'
* The (re)commodification of student lifestyles, and retail and
leisure services
* Changing normative ideals of youth and adulthood
* Conflict and cohesion between student populations, established
residential communities and other stakeholders
* Local politics, social movements and electoral voting
Please send expressions of interest in the form of an abstract (see

Smith ([log in to unmask]) by 1st October 2006.
