Call for Papers
2007 Meeting of the AAG, San Francisco, CA,
17th -21st April, 2007
Session Title: The production of penal spaces
Convenors: Bettina van Hoven, University of Groningen and
David Sibley,University of Leeds
Context: While there has been considerable discussion of
prisons as disciplinary spaces, particularly examining
surveillance from a Foucauldian perspective, empirical
studies of the role of prisons in the production of space
and of prisoners and guards as agents in the making
of space within the prison, have been relatively few. The
purpose of this session will be to explore various facets
of prison spaces, including the economic and social
relations associated with prison construction, everyday
practices of control and discipline, inmates as
agents in the shaping of space within prisons, and the
roles of race, gender, sexuality, age and ability in the
use of prison spaces.
Offers of papers should be sent to: Bettina van Hoven:

by October 15th, 2006.
