Subject: BPS community psychology section - message from Jim Orford original
email

Dear All,

We had a productive session at the Community Psychology conference in Great
Yarmouth with about 10 of us looking at why and how we need to organise
ourselves more collectively within the UK. We said that we would feed back
to the Community Psychology List where we are up to so far. Do here goes....

At the conference we began by re-orientating ourselves to why we need to
organise :

Why Organise?

Exchange info and support
Influence and activism
Collectivising
Facilitating collective voice
Sharing practice
Promoting Community Psychology
Legitimation
Regional representation.

We went through the necessary procedures to form a British Psychological
Therapy Section which have been investigated by David Fryer:

A BPS Section can be formed provided that the following conditions are met
(in accordance with Rule 40) 1. A proposal to the Council of the BPS for
the formation of a new Section of the Society on "Community Psychology" (see
more on the proposal below)

2. Support for the proposal from at least 20 Fellows or Associate Fellows
of the Society

3. The proposal is considered and approved by the Research Board of the BPS

4. The proposal is then approved by the BPS Representative Council

5. At least 1% of the Society's membership then indicates that they would be
willing to join the Section if formed

6. The proposal for the formation of the CP Section is then put to a vote of
the membership and a majority votes in favour!

A proposal may look like:
What is (CP)? (3 pages)
A precedent for such a section (half page) A brief history of (CP) (3 pages)
The research topics of (CP) (7 pages) Why a CP section is needed (2 pages)
The aims of a CP section (one page)

We spoke about how we organise ourselves and how we might take forward the
writing of a proposal:

1) continuing to use the email based discussion list moderated by Rebekah,
and to increase use of facilities such as discussion rooms.

2) possibly developing greater linkage across the various local networks eg
through more frequent meetings than currently..

3) future conferences

We again briefly rehearsed the pros and cons of this development but agreed
that following the vote at the Exeter conference 2 years ago we are
committed to taking this forward, and indeed have made progress on this.
There was some concern about excluding people who are not members of the BPS
and hoped there are ways around this ( eg perhaps through the BPS service
user group we thought we could maybe make representation that this section
could hind a way of being more open to others outside professional
psycholgists?) . We think that events and conferences can be open to all

There are some actions we identified to be completed BY THE END OF OCTOBER
and Mike and Rebekah volunteered to help with these too.

1) Complete "What is Community Psychology?" with Praxis section (Annie, Jim
and David; Annie to add a section on action/ praxis within community
psychology based on examples presented at recent conference )
2) Complete brief history of community psychology (2-3 pages) (Mike
Ridley-Dash)
3) Find out another Section's rules (David? Jan?), draft some suggested
rules (David? Jan?)
4) Detail the precedent for a Comm Psych Section (Jim?)
5) Examples of community psychology research (David)
6) Lisa is collating feedback on drafts re "Why a Community Psychology
Section is needed" and Lisa and Rebekah are happy to collate/comment on
drafts.
7) Let the Electronic List know where things are up to (Jan)

Any offers of help of suggestions would be appreciated. Please note the
emails of everyone involved so far have been cc'd.

With best wishes
Jan Bostock, David Fryer, Louisa Goodbody, Annie Mitchell, Jim Orford,
Rebekah Pratt, Mike Ridley-Dash, Lisa Thorne
