VLE patent infringement action throws Learning on Screen conference
sessions into high relief
Virtual Learning Environments or VLEs are the must-have tools for most
educational establishments. A commercial provider, Blackboard (now
incorporating WebCT), has been working to dominate this market place on an
international scale. Meanwhile, open source and home grown systems have
been gaining ground as viable and preferred value-for-money options.
It may be no surprise to some now to find that Blackboard has filed patent
applications for ‘learning management systems’ and is reportedly proceeding
with a patent infringement action against a competitor see

The forthcoming Learning on Screen conference at The Old Library,
Birmingham (see
http://www.bufvc.ac.uk/conferences/learningonscreen/index.html) includes
sessions on 19th September which will address the use of alternatives to
Blackboard – LAMS, SAKAI and Moodle – and the integration of moving image
content. On 20th September senior advisors on copyright and licensing for
education (Prof. Sol Picciotto, Prof. Charles Oppenheim, Richard McCracken
and Alma Hales) will make their contribution to the discussion.
