The dream took place near the bed
he dreamed it in. He stood
barefoot in their walk-in-'robe,
reaching out to take from his wife
her - their - lovely boy toddler.
Next moment, the boy changed to being
a young dog, the very dog that
just months ago came to live with them,
a handsome labrador - which now dug rapidly
into the floor which was not wood but sand.
In the hole thus made he sat himself down
with a towel over his head
so they could not see his face.
The couple looked through the doorway
into each other's face,
he reading there her consciousness
of loss - repeatedly inflicted,
so that childlessness became her life.
