Arrangements for the security of collections are an integral part of
collections care. These training sessions will provide practical advice and
guidance on security arrangements for collections. They will also consider
the role of Crime Prevention Officers and how museums can work with them in
order to obtain the expert advice required as part of the Museum
Accreditation Scheme. The workshops will contain a strong practical element
and attendees will be invited to discuss security issues in a museum /
historic house environment.

Museums, libraries and archives are faced with the need to clear third party
rights on a regular basis as well as create opportunities to license out
their own content for potential income generation. This one-day workshop
provides an introduction to the basic principles of licensing within the
context of working with collections. The course offers practical training,
giving participants the tools they need to choose, create and negotiate
licences for the use of third party rights as well as to allow the full
exploitation of their own assets. Participants should have previously
attended a Copyright Essentials workshop or have a sound working knowledge
of copyright.

October 4th-6th, Budapest: ANTI-SEIZURE AND LEGAL IMMUNITY: the Safeguarding
of Works of Art on Loan within the European Union and Beyond 
This seminar will look at what is perhaps the most important aspect of the
crucial modern issue of art mobility within Europe and the wider museum
community - the growth of national statutes that guarantee immunity from
legal action to works of art on loan. In particular it will look in depth at
the countries that already have anti-seizure laws and the standards that new
anti-seizure laws must satisfy to be effective and ethically acceptable. The
conference begins with an opening reception on the night of 4th October. 
The normal conference rate is £338, with a special rate of £275 for UKRG
members.

October 18th, London: Dispute Resolution Methods for Holocaust Looted Art
Claims
in association with Finers Stephens Innocent, Solicitors, London
A decade has now elapsed since the principal art-acquiring countries of the
world first had to grapple with the dilemmas caused by art looting over the
period 1933 - 1945. This conference focuses on a particular aspect of
Holocaust-related claims and controversies, namely the limits of litigation
and the comparative development of other methods of dispute resolution:
government advisory panels, independent private committees of inquiry,
private mediation and other non-forensic modes of resolution. 
The cost of this seminar is £176.25 inc. VAT, £117.50 for UKRG members.

Don't Panic: Dealing with Hazardous Materials in Collections 
21-22 November 2006, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery 
Are objects bad for your health? What lurks in your store room? Do you know
what to do with an unexploded bomb? ICON's Care of Collections Group is
planning a two day conference on hazardous materials in collections from
21-22 November 2006. It will highlight issues of risk, solutions to storage,
transport, display and disposal. The days will be focusing on organic and
inorganic materials covering everything from radiation to asbestos. 
The venue will be Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which has a diverse
collection.

7. FEDERATION OF MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES IN WALES
 
Contemporary Collecting: a practical workshop
This workshop is being organised by the Specialist Subject Network (SSN) in
Urban Social History and the Federation of Museums and Art Galleries of
Wales.
Following the success of the SSN day held in Bristol last year a new
workshop has been arranged to build upon gaps identified at that day.  The
workshop is free and open to all.
A mixture of speakers from the SSN steering group and guests with practical
case studies will be present.  Under discussion will be why should we bother
with Contemporary Collecting?, Contemporary Collecting Strategies and using
Outreach as a tool for Contemporary Collecting. 
With time set aside for discussion of the issues, information sharing and
learning from each other, the aim is that participants will finish the day
armed with practical ways to go about writing a Contemporary Collecting
Strategy, as well as some ideas for how to put it into practice.
The workshop will run in Cardiff on 11th October and in Newcastle on 18th
October.

Facilitation Skills Workshops

The Facilitation Skills Workshop is designed to teach new skills and build
confidence in those leading debate and discussion activities with young
people. This participative three hour session examines facilitation styles,
stimulating and managing discussions, and dealing with challenging
behaviours. It has been developed in consultation with science centre
educators, engagement specialists, and professional facilitators. This is a
foundation level workshop.
