Liverpool John Moores University and British Red Cross Fee-Waiver PhD
Studentship
Practising citizenship, narrating identity: cultural histories of Red Cross
volunteers
School of Media, Critical and Creative Arts
Background
The Department of Media and Cultural Studies is collaborating with the
British Red Cross to offer this fee-waiver studentship. This project emerges
from the Red Cross Library of Life (http://www.libraryoflife.net/Public/),
an online repository of life memories set up in 2004.
The studentship will investigate the cultural histories of Red Cross
volunteers in the North of England. A key outcome of the research will be a
database of oral histories of Red Cross volunteers. In critically assessing
these materials, the project will draw together key debates on citizenship
and cultural identity in the context of post-war civil society. The role of
discourses and media representations, and more particularly ideologies of
agency, community and gender, are likely to frame the investigation. The
gathering of oral histories of Red Cross volunteers is an essential element
of this project, but the specific focus of the analysis within the broad
discipline of media and cultural studies may be open to negotiation
depending on the skills and expertise of the candidate.
The British Red Cross will facilitate access to volunteers regionally, to
key staff both regionally and nationally, and will provide opportunities for
participation in its voluntary and educational work locally.
Studentship Details
The studentship is for three-year full-time study, to commence in Autumn
2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. It comprises a fee-waiver at the
UK/EU rate equivalent to £3,162 per annum, drawn from the UoA66
Communication, media and cultural studies capability fund. In addition, the
Red Cross is offering £3,000 in total over 3 years to cover costs incurred
from the collection of oral histories and allied activities. Suitably
qualified candidates may be eligible to apply for hourly-paid undergraduate
teaching within the School of Media, Critical and Creative Arts. The
studentship will operate within the institutional framework for postgraduate
research, details of which may be found from the LJMU Research and Graduate
School website (http://cwis.livjm.ac.uk/RGSO/index.htm).
The successful applicant will:
· Have a good first degree in a relevant humanities/social science
discipline, such as Media and Cultural Studies, History or Sociology
· Normally have a MA degree in a relevant discipline, which should
include research methods training. Candidates who do not possess this
qualification may exceptionally be considered but will need to undertake
research methods training immediately upon the commencement of the
studentship.
· Demonstrate the skills and capability to undertake doctoral research
within the period of the award
· Demonstrate an understanding of NGOs and their volunteers
· Need to undertake a criminal records bureau check commensurate with
