I think Melanie makes an excellent point.
I would like to see CILIP Enterprises diversify a little into some of the
promotional material that the ALA does so well. The READ poster and
bookmark campaign is fantastic, but for the life of me I can't see why we
cannot produce something similar in the UK. A lot of the celebrities in
that campaign are actually from the British Isles. It would be good to see
CILIP produce this kind of material for advocacy purposes, if for no other
reason that I stop being bombarded with commercial promotional material from
publishers when I visit public libraries. I'd really like to see a return
to the profession promoting what we do, rather than relying on whatever
publisher posters we can get our hands on.
I don't see why it wouldn't be a money-maker either.
Cheers
David

Subject: Re: Opinions needed - Gazette report: Good progress on CILIP's new
business model
This is a bit of an aside.
I have been following the discussions on this subject that are being
posted but have yet to read the article in the Gazette so can't really
comment at the moment. What I did want to say is that yesterday I was
wandering around the ALA website and couldn't help thinking 'wow, why
isn't CILIP like this'!
What they do is not really outside of the box but seems to be more in
tune with meeting the needs of members. It's attractive, alive, and
really says this is an organisation I really ought to belong to. In fact
it even made me wish I was able to join instead of continuing in CILIP!

CILIP New Business Model Working Group
I was disappointed to find (according to the report in Gazette 11-24
August, page 3) that in their discussions to identify CILIP's core
functions there appears to have been little or no consideration of
possibilities, but only an agreement on the status quo - Regulate the
LIS profession; Support LIS professional development; Provide
advocacy.
Shouldn't such an important working group, working in a time of crisis
for CILIP, have thought 'outside the box' - considered new and
exciting
functions, which could both attract and retain members? I do not think
members want a reaffirmation of more of the same in the new business
model - the Terms of Reference make it clear that the model should
generate income, not allow CILIP to carry on as it is.
If you agree with this statement, please make it known via this list

by emailing CILIP ([log in to unmask]) directly "For attention of the
