Nick,
I asked at least a year ago if this term could be included in the NMR thesaurus as we have many in the Lakes, however I think I was told that it was too local a term? I can't remember exactly, someone may be able to confirm this? I have had to resort to using trackway and write in our description that it is an outgang.
In the Lakes it is a route/track from a village on to the fell, often used to move animals on to the upland grazing areas (or common land).
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Eleanor

Subject: Outgang
Hi folks
its Friday, so here goes
2 queries
Anyone define for me what an outgang is - as far as I can work out it
is a route out of a village to communal land (and BTW if anyone knows of
a good online glosary for Local History/medieval terms that would be
good to know - our hard copy one doesn't have this in)
Secondly, what would I index it as in the NMR thesaurus? Perhaps a
candidate term?
cheers
best wishes
