ECSA Workshop on Marine & Estuarine Governance
11 - 13 September 2006
The University of Hull, Hull, UK
This workshop aims to bring together those interested in the management,
policy, administration and legislation for estuaries, coasts and the wider
marine environment. It will discuss the present developments in these
topics and look ahead to the coming years by addressing regional, country,
European and international aspects and the inter-relationships between
these. It will concentrate on the current approach to the management of
coastal and marine resources in which the different aspects are interlinked
by being embedded within an holistic, ecosystem approach.
It is proposed to discuss recent developments in the marine environment,
for example the opportunity to discuss the proposed Marine Bill for the UK
(MMO, species protection & unlicensed activities), the role of the European
Marine Strategy and the proposed Marine Framework Directive, the links and
overlap between the latter and the Water Framework and Habitats Directives,
and the potential conflicts between nature conservation and habitat
management and use-management such as fisheries, aggregate and offshore
energy. It will also describe and contrast strategies between countries.
The workshop will be run as a set of interactive discussion sessions and
case-studies and will be led by natural and social scientists, as well as
those with a legal background. There will be several opportunities
throughout the programme for participants to give short 10 minute
presentations. The workshop will be of relevance to those working in
government, statutory and non-statutory bodies, industries, consultancies
and academia.
