Are we rolling
Rolling to manchester
Can you help?
11 National organisations of Disabled People have now signed up to the
British
Council of Disabled People (BCODP), People First, DAN campaign against
aspects of welfare reform that penalise disabled people and plunge them
deeper into the poverty trap. At least two local groups have signed up and
more are clearly
supporting and getting involved day by day.
Can you help? We need a name for this coalition. Ideas much appreciated.
A national day of action is beckoning. We are not sure of the date at this
stage. IIt will be during the week beginning 25th September. A fringe
meeting is
being planned in Manchester at the labour party conference. This will be
hosted
by BCODP and People First. We would like a direct action in support of this
meeting to achieve good media focus.
Can you help? We are looking for ideas for this direct action. Please let me
know what your ideas are. Just to get you started this is my idea. A mass
scrounge. Or its opposite depending on how you feel about the power of the
£80million crip pound. So ideas wanted and wanted before 10th August.
We recognise that not all of us can get to Manchester. So on the same day we
are
asking local groups and local organisations of disabled people to campaign
outside local employment agencies. The Shaw Trust is a particularly favoured
target. Why do this. A raft of Welfare Reform is for the penalisation to be
achieved through the voluntary sector and private industry.
Can you help? Can you make a local action happen? Do you have the commitment
know. Can you talk to your local organisations. Can you ask them to
participate?
Please let me know if you can.
Local organisations will also be asked to help with getting petitions signed
and
sending messages of support to campaign headquarters. Can you help? Are you
able to do this?
Local organisations are also being asked to sign up to supporting those
agencies
that cannot get disabled people into work.
Can you help? Can you ask your local organisation to commit to not signing
up?
Can you ask them not to support projects that actively damage disabled
people?
Are you, or do you know, a disabled artist. We are looking for artists to
start
a work that shows how they feel about this reform. On the one hand we are
being
offered employment is a discriminatory workforce on the other if we fail in
the
quest for employment we are having our benefits cut (this should not happen
if
you are on benefits now but we cannot guarantee what happens in future so
you
might lose out. But even if you don’t lose out how about those that do.
Can you help? Can you create and can you contribute your work.
We are looking to place a national advert in the press. We expect that this
would cost £5000. I say disabled people can pay for this now. If 1,000
disabled
people give £5 we have the money.
If 500 of you give £10 we have the money
If 250 of you give £20 we have the money
We respectfully ask our non disabled allies to give some money too.
Can you help? Send your cheque payable to BCODP, to Welfare Reform Campaigns
Fund, c/o BCODP, Litchurch Plaza, Litchurch Lane, Derby, DE24 8AA. My cheque
is already in the post.
Very sorry about this long email but we want you in the loop. We want you
supporting this. We want you to do what you can to help.
Please get involved.
PS. Can someone please post this to Danmail
