italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
REMEMBERING MORO
Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, London, 10 and 11 November 2006
This conference is a fully interdisciplinary forum for the examination of
historiographical and cultural representations of the event that marks the
culmination of political violence and terrorism in the Italian 1970s: the
1978 kidnapping and murder of Christian Democrat party secretary and
ex-Prime Minister, Aldo Moro.
The emphasis given to remembering in the conference title seeks, in the
first instance, to forefront exploration of how the memory of the Moro case
has engaged with, and impacted on, the multiple discourses of Italian
historiography, politics, law and cultural production.
By inviting a cross-section of international scholars from a range of
disciplinary perspectives, the aim of the two-day plenary event is to
explore the different readings and approaches that have already been
brought to the study of the events surrounding Moro’s kidnapping and death
and to identify points of convergence and divergence through active
cross-disciplinary exchange. The conference further seeks to enhance the
discussion and broaden the range of approaches brought to the Moro case by
inviting papers from scholars working on emerging areas of research
(relating to the body, spatial practice and trauma studies) that have much
to contribute to a contemporary re-examination of the event and its
cultural legacy
Finally, the conference seeks to examine how very recent cultural products,
which review the Moro affair at a distance of 25-30 years, evaluate its
significance and relevance to present-day Italian culture and society.
