While out test-pitting in a rural village in Essex this week, we came across
an extremely hard and compact layer of pebbles and what appears to be
smithing waste running right in front of a house which dates back to at
least the 15th century. The surface of the layer produced 12th - 13th
century pottery. One obvious interpretation is that it is a yard surface,
but is it possible that it could be the surface of a medieval street or
road? Has anyone come across a medieval road with a similar surface?
