Digging at Canterbury a few years back on the WhitefriarsBig Dig I excavated
a medieval road that had a very similar matrix - very compact fine and
medium gravels overlying a dark slag and organic layer. Complete with wheel
ruts and some of the most amazing potholes: you could see where the medieval
road users had patched it where it had slumped into earlier (Roman and
Below this road was a Saxon road that was in even better condition and which
utilised loads of Roman building materials as well as the more usual gravels
and other stones.
In the second phase of the dig we also found the orignial 'Gravel Walk'
which was again a medieval road way with ruts and everything and again it
was compacts gravels and stones.
